Skin Diseases / Disorders

Like the heart , stomach , and brain , your skin is an organ. In fact, it’s the largest organ in your body, but it’s still easy to take skin for granted. Unless there’s a problem, you may not think about your skin very much. But skin has an important job to do.

Your skin is constantly protecting you. Your skin keeps infections out of your body and keeps you from getting sick. When you take care of your skin, you’re helping your skin do its job. And taking care of your skin today will help prevent future problems, like wrinkles and even skin cancer. Good skin care also has tremendous social and mental benefits. By looking good it makes a great first impression on others in an interview, a date, or even just making new friends. The mental benefits may even be greater – it keeps you feeling good about yourself. Nothing gives you more self-confidence and an extra bounce in your step more than knowing you look good. Proper skin care, being that skin is the most noticeable part of a person’s body is the #1 way to get that feeling.

There are many different types of skin problems. Access the links below to learn more about various skin Diseases / Disorders.

Acne & Acne Scars

Acne occurs due to complex interaction of changing hormones, sebum and a bacterium called Propionibacterium acnes.

Vitiligo

Vitiligo causes your skin to lose color or pigmentation. Smooth white or light areas called macules or patches appear on your skin.

Eczema

Eczema is a condition in which patches of skin become inflamed, itchy, cracked, and rough. Some types can also cause blisters.

Urticaria

Urticaria, also known as hives, is a skin condition characterized by the appearance of itchy, raised, and red bumps on the skin.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a condition that causes the body to make new skin cells in days rather than weeks. As these cells pile up on the surface of the skin, you may see thick, scaly patches.

Warts

Warts are benign skin growths that appear when a virus infects the top layer of the skin. Viruses that cause warts are called human papillomavirus (HPV).

Fungal Infection

“White spot” or “panau” is a superficial fungal infection of the skin which is common in children and adults. It may be itchy and is made up of fine scaly white patches on the skin. It may appear on your face, neck, shoulders, arms, trunk or legs.

Neurofibromatosis

Neurofibromatosis (NF), a type of syndrome with neurological and cutaneous manifestations, is a rare genetic disorder that typically causes benign tumors of the nerves and growths in other parts of the body, including the skin

Nails Diseases / Disorders

Nails are unique structures formed of keratin, just like hair and the superficial skin layers. Healthy nails appear smooth and have consistent coloring. As you age, you may develop vertical ridges, or your nails may be a bit more brittle. This is harmless. Spots due to injury should grow out with the nail.

Abnormalities — such as spots, discoloration, and nail separation — can result from injuries to the fingers and hands, viral warts (periungual warts), infections (onychomycosis), and some medications, such as those used for chemotherapy.

Certain medical conditions can also change the appearance of your fingernails. However, these changes can be difficult to interpret. Your fingernails’ appearance alone isn’t enough to diagnose a specific illness. A doctor will use this information, along with your other symptoms and a physical exam, to make a diagnosis.

Nail diseases vary in etiology and morphology. The most common types are presented here.

Paronychia

Paronychia is an infection of the proximal and lateral fingernails and toenails folds, including the tissue that borders the root and sides of the nail.

Onychomycosis

Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the toenails or fingernails that may involve any component of the nail unit, including the matrix, bed, or plate.

Nail Dystrophy

Nail dystrophy, may result from any traumatic or inflammatory process that involves the nail matrix, nail bed, or surrounding tissues.

Hair Diseases / Disorders

Human hair grows in a continuous cyclic pattern of growth and rest known as the hair growth cycle. Three phases of the cycle exist: Anagen= growth phase; Catagen= degradation phase; Telogen = resting phase. This cycle applies to all hair in the body, though their duration may vary in different areas of the body. This means that a few hairs often up to 50-100 hairs may be lost every day. This is called normal hair loss and does not need any treatment.

If you have symptoms associated with a hair disorder, you should see your health care provider. A physical exam can help identify the type of hair disorder, and laboratory tests can reveal any underlying diseases. In the case of hirsutism, imaging may help diagnose the cause.

Androgenetic alopecia

Alopecia is defined as loss of hair from the body. Hair loss is often a cause of great concern to the patient for cosmetic and psychologic reasons.

Alopecia areata

Alopecia areata is typically sudden patchy nonscarring hair loss in people with no obvious skin or systemic disorder. The scalp and beard are most frequently affected, but any hairy area may be involved.

Scalp psoriasis

Many people who have plaque psoriasis develop psoriasis on their scalp at some point. This can lead to hair loss.
